U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (TX)

In 1993, Kay Bailey Hutchison was elected as the first woman to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate. Seven years later, more than four million Texans re-elected her to a second full term – no other Texas candidate has ever captured more votes. In 2006, she was again re-elected by an overwhelming margin. She serves in the Senate leadership, having been elected by her colleagues to be chairman of the Republican Policy Committee in the 110th Congress, making her the fourth-highest ranking Senate Republican. Her accomplishments include championing Hispanic Serving Institutions as Co-Chair of the Senate HSI Coalition and initiating the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission.

U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (FL)

Officially sworn-in on January 4, 2005, as the thiry-third Senator of the state of Florida, Senator Mel Martinez made history when he assumed his role as the first Cuban-American U.S. Senator. As the only immigrant in the U.S. Senate, Senator Martinez brought a unique perspective to the 109th Congress’ debate on how to best deal with the growing issue of undocumented workers in our country. He established himself as a voice of reason – calling for a respectful tone during the debate and ensuring that any solution considered be comprehensive. Prior to his Senate election, Martinez served President Bush in his Cabinet as the nation’s 12th Housing and Urban Development Secretary.

Carlos M. Gutierrez was sworn into office on February 7, 2005, as the 35th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the voice of business in government. The former chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Kellogg Company, Secretary Gutierrez is a core member of President Bush’s economic team. He oversees a diverse Cabinet agency with some 38,000 workers and a $6.5 billion budget focused on promoting U.S. business. Opening international markets to U.S. companies to create jobs and build a stronger America is a top priority for Secretary Gutierrez. He believes passionately in President Bush’s vision of a 21st century where America is the best country in the world with which to do business and where everyone has the opportunity to experience the joy and pride of ownership and to live the American Dream.
