JUPITER -- Mahoney: Alternative energy
is something the U.S. is 'finally committed to doing'
by Jim Turner,
JUPITER — Congressman Tim Mahoney, D-Palm Beach Gardens, said
alternative energy can finally end the nation's dependence upon
foreign fuels and jobs for Floridians as the 2007 Alternative Energy
Summit opened at the Jupiter Beach Resort this morning.
“Alternative energy is something this country is finally committed
to doing,” Mahoney said.
The summit, which continues through the afternoon, is to designed to
identify the role Florida can play in developing alternative energy.
Eric Wachsman, of the University of Florida, will discuss why
Florida should engage in sustainable energy. Meanwhile, Rick
Driscoll, of Florida Atlantic University, will be part of a panel
session on cutting edge research in alternative energy.
Mahoney noted that in the district he represents the drop out rate
is 40 percent, yet 80 percent of those students were receiving
passing grades.
“That most telling statistic says there is a sense of hopelessness,
they don't see the difference in graduating,” Mahoney said.
“Alternative energy industry can give these young men and women an
opportunity.”
Les Croland, of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge, a leading sponsor of
the summit, said the event will look at what is available currently
in alternative energy in Florida, what can done and the role
government can play.
“We need to become self reliant on our energy needs,” Croland said.
