Summit to focus on Stockton as great economic
center

Congressman Jerry McNerney,
D-Pleasanton, is organizing an economic summit in Stockton that will
tap business, education, transportation and economic-development
experts who will focus on how the area can spur economic growth and
jobs.
The "2007 Economic Summit: Innovation,
Entrepreneurship and Renewable Energy" will highlight expanding
innovation and entrepreneurship in San Joaquin County to promote
economic growth, particularly through the expanded use and
production of new energy technologies.
The summit will include an opening
address by McNerney, followed by a series of panel discussions on a
variety of topics.
The event is being organized by
the Public Forum Institute and will be held Aug. 22, at
University of the Pacific in Stockton.
"It's really important to bring jobs
to San Joaquin County, especially Stockton," McNerney said Thursday.
"I see a tremendous potential for
growth and for Stockton to become an economic center. It's an
unpolished jewel in California."
Part of the effort will focus on
raising Stockton up so that people outside the area recognize it as
a good place to do business, he said.
Details will be announced later,
including the announcement of panelists and participants.
Specifically, the summit will:
-
Explore ideas, including tax
incentives and a reduction in regulatory burdens, for creating
an environment that will empower entrepreneurs and small
businesses to locate or expand business in San Joaquin;
-
Identify promising opportunities
for further development of renewable energy businesses;
-
Discuss the establishment of
"smart growth" guidelines for urban planning and affordable
housing; and
-
Examine the necessary steps to
provide sufficient job training to local residents while making
priority investments into science, math, engineering and
technology education to create a pipeline for high tech and
entrepreneurial jobs.
McNerney admitted that the conference,
which could be the first in an annual series, has a lot on the
platter. But it's just hard to imagine getting things started
without an overview session, he said.
"It could be the beginning of a
dialogue and an awareness of what Stockton and San Joaquin County
has to offer."
Mark Plovnick, UOP's director of
economic development, said it's a positive that McNerney is the one
calling for the summit because through his congressional post, he
has more ability than most to help shape policy and funding that can
help bring about economic development and grow jobs in the area.
"So it's a good thing he's willing to
listen to what people have to say," he said.
McNerney, who before being elected to
Congress made a career as an energy wind consultant, said he thinks
the renewable-energy sector holds great promise of economic
development for this agricultural area.
Biodiesel and ethanol facilities are
in the works at the Port of Stockton, he said, and there are deep
agricultural resources to tap for future development.
"We can really become a leader," he
said.
"I see that as a linchpin for our
economy."
