Policy Areas: Workforce Training
One
of the most widely publicized consequences of globalization and
trade liberalization have been the growth in the mobility of workers
and rapid changes in the demand for worker skills. As never before,
the government and the private sector believe that they must take
action to help Americans compete for jobs not only among themselves,
but also other highly educated workers from as far away as China and
India. As part of this debate, leaders must decide what role
community colleges will play in providing life-long training that
will allow the workforce to adjust to changes in the economy. At the
same time, both state and federal lawmakers ponder reforms to the
nation’s primary and secondary education system — including
increased accountability and the use problem-based curriculum —
that can help meet companies’ surging demand for employees with
high math and science competency. Increasingly, industry leaders
suggest that the availability of skilled workers will determine the
ability of the United States to compete in a global economy.
