Maiman,
born in Los Angeles, 1927, is credited with the invention of
the first workable optical laser.
The laser, an acronym for Light Amplification by the
Stimulated Emission of Radiation, proved more successful
than previous attempts involving microwaves or other energy
sources. Maiman
showed promise with electronics early on, earning money for
college by fixing electrical appliances and radios. His preliminary work with optical lasers began while pursuing
his PhD at Stanford. Shortly
after graduating, Maiman formed the Korad Corporation, where
he developed his Ruby System for emitting a concentrated red
beam of energy. The
laser is already an important tool, and many believe it will
be vital to harnessing the release of energy from the
hydrogen ion.
