Past Forums: Oceans & Water

In November 2004, a distinguished group of leaders from more than fifteen countries, gathered at the World Ocean Forum in New York City to examine the relationship between the ocean and public health and to create a succinct list of ideas to be pursued by both human scientists and physical scientists in the years ahead. Over the course of the two days, more than fifty (50) delegates participated in fourteen distinct content sessions, identifying areas of common interest and establishing a common agenda based on “first wins” – action items that are achievable in the near future. These first wins were captured in a report, The Ocean, Water and Public Health: A Common Agenda.

In the aftermath of the earthquakes and tsunami that devastated South East Asia last December, we are sadly reminded of the importance and imminence of the many issues either broached or discussed at length at the Forum. As our hearts go out to each and everyone impacted by the tragedy, we are hopeful that initiatives such as this one will evolve from a group exercise in thought to a means of demonstratively addressing the various ocean, water and public health issues that affect us today, tomorrow and the years to come.
