International e-Participation
and Local Democracy Symposium
August 3, 2006
Baltimore, Maryland
What is e-Democracy?
The buzz surrounding this issue is deafening. Many believe that
through e-Government we can create a truly citizen-centric,
efficient government. According to a Pew Internet and American Life
Project poll, "65% of Americans expect to find government
information online." Citizens are expecting e-Government to expand,
however they have yet to determine how: Is e-Government simply
allowing citizens to conduct their business with government online?
What are the limitations of e-Government? How should the political
arena utilize internet resources? Should we use the power of IT to
radically reengineer the relationship between citizens and
government?
On August 3 in Baltimore, the Public Forum Institute will host a
global symposium to help create the foundation for an evolving
e-Democracy agenda. This international initiative will follow
and complement a symposium being held in Budapest. The Baltimore
event will integrate the findings from the Budapest Symposium.
The Baltimore symposium will discuss how online resources should be
utilized to stimulate participation and discussion between the
government and citizens. Experts, elected officials, academics and
other leaders in e-Government will reevaluate the governments’ view
on how “eServices” can be provided to the public. Participants will
investigate how to engage the ‘silent majority’ in new innovative
ways to increase public participation in government discourse.
Key partners include: the United Nations Department of Economic &
Social Affairs; Department for Communities and Local Government
(UK); Council of Europe; National Association of Secretaries of
State; and, the International Centre of Excellence for Local
e-Democracy.
Join
us in Baltimore and engage these questions with leaders and experts
in the field of e-Government!
