America Talks Health Care
Tommy G. Thompson, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services
January 23, 2003 · 9:00 am - 12:30 pm
Austin, TX

TOPIC: PREVENTION

Our nation faces new challenges in the coming years in keeping health care both affordable and accessible while maintaining quality for all Americans. One critical step to overcoming those challenges will be improving our own health by following a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly and having routine check-ups.  Doing this can prevent many diseases such as diabetes, chronic heart problems or cancer.  For example, 50 percent of all American adults are over overweight and approximately 25 percent are obese.  Simply losing weight would prevent many of our health problems.

The goal of the town hall is to discuss how we can improve our prevention efforts.  We will discuss what the government, consumers, businesses, and health care providers are doing and can do to address this issue in Texas and across the country.
